Romania's castles’ collection demonstrates the rich medieval heritage of the country. While castles built between 14th and the 18th century are robust and ascetic fortresses designed to defence their inhabitants against invaders, those constructed beginning with the late 1800s are impressive and luxurious. The two most popular castles are: Peles Castle (elegant, 160 rooms bursting with European art) and Bran Castle (built in the mid-1300s and the legendary home to Bram Stoker's Count Dracula).
Built at the base of the Bucegi Mountains in the town of Sinaia, Peles Castle - one of the most spectacular castles in Europe - is a masterpiece of German new-Renaissance architecture. Its construction started in 1873 and it was completed in 1883. Romanian royal family used Peles Castle as their summer residence until 1947. Its 160 rooms are adorned with the finest examples of European art, Murano crystal chandeliers, German stained-glass windows and Cordoba leather-covered walls.
Built on the site of a Teutonic Knights stronghold dating from 1212 - as a border point on the trading route between Transylvania and Wallachia -, the castle was first documented in an act issued by Louis I of Hungary on November 19, 1377, giving the Saxons of Kronstadt (Brasov) the privilege to build the Citadel. It is well known also as Dracula Castle.
